My friend Monte and I have been joking for years about what a disaster it would be if Jordan died before he finished the WoT series, but I never thought it would really happen. He was a relatively young man. How sad.
I understand he has dictated enough to finish the 12th book, the last of the series, so it's a matter of finding writers capable of imitating his style, I suppose.
I was in the WhiteDwarf bookstore this evening as Walter was putting up Jordan's obituary on their notice board. I have to confess I have never read any of his books.
I found the first book in a sale bin in a drugstore, years ago, and had no idea it was the beginning of a saga. In fact, I usually put a lot of store in cover art, and this had some of the worst I'd ever seen.
Well, I ended up reading 8 of the following books, I think, and then burning out over it. I decided to let it go until it was determined whether the series would ever end. Now it appears that the end is, indeed, in sight, so I may try to catch up on those I haven't read.
It is a fairly complicated and VERY, VERY long fantasy quest tale of Rand al'Thor, the Dragon Reborn. Lots (I mean lots) of politics and religion. The one thing I will say is that women get a fair shake in Jordan's work. In fact, they often end up in power, and certainly one group is almost always the power behind the throne, if not in front of it!
Huge 'net communities devoted to these books...Google WoT and see.
